The Said bin Taimur Rial Era
In 1940, Sultan Said bin Taimur introduced the Muscat and Oman Rial, which coexisted with the Indian Rupee and the Maria Theresa Taler. This currency was divided into 200 baisa and silver coins of 1/4, 1/2 and 1 rial were minted. In 1970, with the ascension to the throne of Sultan Qaboos bin Said, there was a significant change in the currency, renaming it the Omani Rial and modernizing its design to reflect the country's new era.
The modern Omani Rial
Since 1970, the Omani Rial has established itself as a stable and strong currency in the region. Commemorative series of coins and banknotes have been issued to celebrate national milestones, such as the 15th, 20th and 25th anniversary of the National Revival. A notable development in Omani numismatics was the introduction in 1995 of a 50-rial bill, the largest denomination in the country's history, featuring advanced security features and a design that reflects Oman's culture and heritage.
