Nepal Coins
The official currency of Nepal is the Nepalese Rupee, which is divided into 100 paisa. Nepal's monetary system has a rich history dating back centuries, reflecting the country's cultural and economic evolution.
Current currency in circulation
The modern Nepalese rupee was introduced in 1932, replacing the silver mohur. Currently, coins of 1, 2, 5 and 10 rupees are in circulation, as well as banknotes of 5, 10, 20, 50, 50, 100, 500 and 1000 rupees. The design of these coins and banknotes often includes images of the Nepalese royal family, historical monuments and local fauna, such as the Indian rhinoceros.
Monetary history and highlights
Prior to the rupee, Nepal used a monetary system based on the silver mohur, dating back to the 17th century. An important milestone in Nepalese numismatics was the minting of the first mechanical coins in 1911, during the reign of King Prithvi Bir Bikram Shah. Another significant event occurred in 2007, when new banknotes were issued that omitted the image of the king after the abolition of the monarchy, marking a historic change in Nepalese coin design.
