Netherlands Coins

The Netherlands has a rich numismatic history that spans centuries. Currently, the official currency is the euro, adopted in 2002. However, prior to the introduction of the euro, the Netherlands had its own national currency with a fascinating history.

The Dutch guilder

Before the euro, the official currency of the Netherlands was the Dutch guilder, also known as the gulden. This currency was in circulation from 1680 until 2002, making it one of the oldest coins in Europe. The guilder was divided into 100 cents and was recognized for its stability and strength in international markets. The last series of guilder banknotes, issued in the 1980s, featured innovative designs with themes of Dutch nature and culture.

Numismatic milestones

Dutch numismatics boasts several significant milestones. In 1967, the Netherlands minted the first legal tender gold coin in Europe since World War II, the gold ducat. In addition, in 1988, the country issued the world's first bimetallic commemorative coin, celebrating the 300th anniversary of the arrival of William III in England. The transition to the euro in 2002 marked the end of an era for the guilder, but the Netherlands continues to issue commemorative euro coins, keeping its numismatic tradition alive.
