Nicaragua Coins

The official currency of Nicaragua is the Nicaraguan córdoba, which has been the country's currency since 1912. Throughout its history, Nicaragua has undergone several changes in its monetary system, reflecting the country's political and economic developments.

Current currency in circulation

The current Nicaraguan córdoba, introduced in 1991, is divided into 100 centavos. There are coins of 5, 10, 25 and 50 centavos, as well as 1, 5 and 10 córdobas. Banknotes in circulation are of 10, 20, 50, 100, 200, 500 and 1000 córdobas. The Central Bank of Nicaragua is responsible for the issuance and regulation of the currency, which bears the name of Francisco Hernández de Córdoba, founder of the cities of Granada and León.

Monetary history and relevant facts

Prior to the córdoba, Nicaragua used the Nicaraguan peso from 1878 to 1912. During the 1980s, the country experienced severe hyperinflation, which led to the introduction of the "córdoba oro" in 1988, which was replaced by the current córdoba in 1991. A notable event in Nicaraguan numismatics was the issuance of silver commemorative coins in 1972, to celebrate the centenary of the birth of the poet Rubén Darío, which are considered valuable pieces for collectors.
