The Rwandan franc is divided into 100 cents and is issued in 500, 1000, 2000 and 5000 franc bills. Coins in circulation include denominations of 1, 5, 10, 10, 20, 50 and 100 francs. Monetary history and highlights
Prior to the introduction of the Rwandan franc, Rwanda used the Rwandan-Burundian franc, shared with Burundi. An important milestone in Rwandan numismatics was the issuance of commemorative coins in 2003 to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the end of the genocide. In addition, in 2019, the National Bank of Rwanda introduced new banknotes with enhanced security features and updated designs reflecting the country's economic and social development.
