Singapore Coins

The official currency of Singapore is the Singapore dollar (SGD), introduced in 1967 following Singapore's independence. Singapore's monetary system has evolved over the years, reflecting its history and economic development.

Current currency in circulation

The Singapore dollar is divided into 100 cents and is available in bills of 2, 5, 10, 10, 50, 100, 1000 and 10000 dollars. Coins in circulation include denominations of 5, 10, 20 and 50 cents, as well as $1. The design of the banknotes features themes related to Singapore's culture, history and progress, while the coins show various motifs, such as the national coat of arms and the national flower, the Vanda Miss Joaquim orchid.

Monetary history and highlights

Prior to the introduction of the Singapore dollar, the country used the Malay and British Borneo dollar. An important milestone in Singapore numismatics was the issuance of the Zodiac coin series between 1981 and 1992, which became a highly prized collection. In 2007, Singapore launched the country's first polymer banknote series, enhancing durability and security features. In addition, in 2019, the Monetary Authority of Singapore issued a commemorative $20 coin to celebrate the bicentennial of the modern founding of Singapore by Sir Stamford Raffles.
