Sweden Coins
The official currency of Sweden is the Swedish krona (SEK), which has been the country's currency since 1873. Swedish numismatics has a rich history dating back centuries, reflecting the economic and cultural evolution of this Nordic nation.
Current currency in circulation
The current Swedish monetary system consists of coins of 1, 2, 5 and 10 kronor, as well as banknotes of 20, 50, 100, 200, 500 and 1000 kronor. In 2016, Sweden introduced a new series of coins and banknotes with modernized designs depicting important historical and cultural figures of the country. Notably, Sweden is one of the countries that has made the most progress towards a cashless society, with widespread use of electronic and mobile payments.
Monetary history and relevant facts
Prior to the krone, Sweden used several coins, including the riksdaler and the copper daler. An important milestone in Swedish numismatics was the issuance of the copper plates in the 17th century, which were the largest and heaviest coins ever minted for general circulation. Another notable fact is that Sweden was the first European country to introduce bank bills in 1661, through the Bank of Stockholm. Swedish numismatics is also known for the "Silver Round", a medieval coin that circulated widely in northern Europe during the 12th and 13th centuries.
