Taiwan Coins

The official currency of Taiwan is the New Taiwan Dollar (TWD), introduced in 1949 after the withdrawal of the Nationalist Chinese government from the island. The Taiwanese monetary system has evolved significantly throughout its history, reflecting the country's political and economic changes.

Current currency in circulation

The new Taiwanese dollar is divided into 100 cents and circulates in denominations of $1, $5, $10 and $50 in coins, and $100, $200, $500, $500, $1,000 and $2,000 in banknotes. The current coins feature designs that reflect Taiwanese culture and history, such as the presidential building on the 10-dollar coin or the plum blossom on the 50-dollar coin.

Monetary history and highlights

Prior to the new Taiwanese dollar, the island used the old Taiwanese dollar and, during the Japanese occupation, the Taiwanese yen. An important milestone in Taiwanese numismatics was the issuance of the 2000 series of banknotes, which included the first $2,000 bill and new security designs. In addition, Taiwan has issued commemorative coins for special events, such as the Olympic Games or national anniversaries, which are highly prized by collectors.
