Tanzania Coins

The official currency of Tanzania is the Tanzanian shilling, which is divided into 100 cents. Introduced in 1966 following the country's independence, the shilling has been the primary unit of currency for more than five decades, reflecting the history and culture of this East African nation.

Monetary history

Prior to the adoption of the Tanzanian shilling, the region used a variety of currencies. During the colonial period, Tanzania (then Tanganyika) used the East African rupee under British rule. After independence in 1961 and union with Zanzibar in 1964, the Bank of Tanzania was established in 1966, which introduced the shilling as the new national currency, marking a milestone in the country's economic sovereignty.

Tanzanian Numismatics

Tanzanian numismatics offers a fascinating insight into the country's history and culture. Coins and banknotes often feature local fauna, such as elephants and giraffes, as well as important historical figures. A notable development is the issuance of commemorative coins for significant events, such as the 50th anniversary of independence in 2011. In addition, Tanzania has issued gold and silver coins for collectors, highlighting themes such as wildlife conservation and cultural heritage.
