Current currency in circulation
The modern Thai baht is divided into 100 satang and is available in 1, 2, 5 and 10 baht coins, as well as smaller denominations of 25 and 50 satang. Current banknotes are issued in denominations of 20, 50, 100, 500 and 1000 baht. The design of coins and banknotes often feature images of the Thai king, Buddhist temples and other important cultural symbols, reflecting the strong connection between the monarchy, religion and Thai national identity.
Monetary history and highlights
Before the introduction of the modern baht, Thailand used a system based on silver weights and cowrie shells. An important milestone in Thai numismatics was the introduction of the first decimal currency in 1897 by King Chulalongkorn (Rama V). During World War II, Thailand issued emergency banknotes known as "government money." In 2018, a new series of banknotes was launched in honor of King Rama X, marking a new chapter in the country's monetary history and continuing the tradition of representing the monarchy on the national currency.
