Tonga Coins

The official currency of Tonga is the pa'anga, also known as the Tongan dollar. This monetary system has a fascinating history that reflects the economic and cultural evolution of this South Pacific island kingdom.

Current currency in circulation

The pa'anga is divided into 100 seniti and was introduced in 1967, replacing the Tongan pound. Currently, coins of 1, 2, 5, 5, 10, 20 and 50 seniti, as well as 1 and 2 pa'anga are in circulation. The banknotes in use are 2, 5, 10, 20, 50 and 100 pa'anga. The design of these pieces usually includes Tongan cultural elements and portraits of the royal family, reflecting the importance of the monarchy in Tongan society.

Monetary history and highlights

Prior to the introduction of the pa'anga, Tonga used several monetary systems, including traditional barter and, later, the Tongan pound since 1921. An important milestone in Tongan numismatics was the issuance of gold coins in 1962 to commemorate the repatriation of Queen Salote. In addition, Tonga has issued numerous commemorative coins over the years, including a series of gold and silver coins in 2015 to celebrate the coronation of King Tupou VI, demonstrating the rich numismatic tradition of the kingdom.
