Transnistria Coins

Transnistria' s monetary history is relatively recent and is closely linked to its complex political situation. Since its declaration of independence from Moldova in 1990, Transnistria has sought to establish its own monetary identity, although it is not recognized internationally as a sovereign state.

Currency used in Transnistria

Initially, Transnistria used the Soviet ruble and then the Russian ruble. In 1994, the country introduced its own currency, the Transnistrian ruble. This currency is divided into 100 kopeks and exists in the form of banknotes and coins. The banknotes feature images of historical figures and landmarks of the region, while the coins have designs that reflect local identity.

Numismatic milestones

An important numismatic milestone in Transnistria was the introduction of plastic coins in 2014, making it one of the few places in the world to issue this type of currency. In addition, the country has issued commemorative coins on several occasions, including series dedicated to local wildlife, historical personalities and significant anniversaries. These special issues have generated interest among collectors, despite Transnistria's unrecognized status in the international community.
