Ukraine Coins
The official currency of Ukraine is the hryvna, introduced in 1996 following the country's independence. Ukrainian numismatics reflect a rich history and culture, with issues commemorating important events and prominent figures of the nation.
Monetary history
Prior to the hryvna, Ukraine used the karbovanets as a transitional currency between 1992 and 1996. Previously, as part of the Soviet Union, the Soviet ruble circulated. The monetary history of the region dates back to medieval times, with the use of silver hryvnas in Kievan Rus, which inspired the name of the current currency.
Numismatic milestones
Ukraine has issued numerous commemorative coins since its independence. Of particular note are series dedicated to the Olympic Games, historical figures such as Yaroslav the Wise, and events such as the anniversary of independence. In 2011, the National Bank of Ukraine won the prestigious Vicenza Numismatica award for its 20th anniversary of independence commemorative coin, recognizing the quality and design of its issues.
