Virgin Islands Coins

The British Virgin Islands currently uses the U.S. dollar as its official currency. This monetary decision reflects the close economic and geographic relationship with the United States, as well as the need for financial stability in this British Overseas Territory.

Monetary history

Prior to adopting the U.S. dollar, the British Virgin Islands used various currencies throughout its history. During the colonial period, Spanish and British coins circulated. Later, in 1913, the British West Indies dollar was introduced and used until 1959. Finally, in 1959, the territory adopted the East Caribbean dollar until it was decided to change to the U.S. dollar in 1973.
