Lithuania Banknotes Catalog
The history of banknotes in Lithuania reflects the country's political and economic evolution. From its first independent banknotes to the adoption of the euro, Lithuanian banknotes have undergone significant changes over time.
Old Lithuanian banknotes
The first modern Lithuanian banknotes were issued in 1922, after the country gained its independence. The national currency, the litas, was introduced in the same year. During the Soviet era, Lithuania used the Soviet ruble. After regaining its independence in 1991, Lithuania reintroduced the litas in 1993, with banknotes featuring important historical and cultural figures of the country.
Current banknotes and adoption of the euro
In 2015, Lithuania officially adopted the euro as its national currency. Euro banknotes are identical in all eurozone countries, but the coins have a national design on the reverse. An important milestone in Lithuanian notafilia was the issuance of the commemorative 10 litas banknote in 2013, celebrating the Lithuanian presidency of the Council of the European Union, being the last banknote issued before the changeover to the euro.
