Luxembourg Banknotes Catalog

The history of banknotes in Luxembourg is fascinating and reflects the country's economic and political evolution. From its first own banknotes to the adoption of the euro, Luxembourg has undergone significant changes in its currency over the years.

Old Luxembourg banknotes

Before the introduction of the euro, Luxembourg used the Luxembourg franc as its official currency. Luxembourg franc banknotes were first issued in 1914 and continued to circulate until 2002. During this period, several series of banknotes were produced, each reflecting the culture and history of the country. One of the most iconic designs was that of the Grand Duchess Charlotte, which appeared on the 100 franc banknotes from 1934 to 1980.

Current banknotes in circulation

Since 2002, Luxembourg has used the euro as its official currency, sharing the same banknotes as other eurozone countries. Euro banknotes in circulation range from €5 to €500, although the €500 bill was discontinued in 2019. These banknotes feature designs of bridges, doors and windows symbolizing openness and cooperation between European countries. Although the banknotes are identical throughout the eurozone, the Luxembourg euro coins have a unique national design on the reverse, showing the portrait of the Grand Duke.
