Antigua and Barbuda Coins

The official currency of Antigua and Barbuda is the Eastern Caribbean dollar, a currency shared by several countries in the region. This monetary system has an interesting history and has undergone significant changes over time.

Current currency and its circulation

The East Caribbean dollar was introduced in 1965, replacing the British West Indies dollar. It is issued and regulated by the Eastern Caribbean Central Bank, based in St. Lucia. Coins in circulation include denominations of 1, 2, 5, 5, 10 and 25 cents, as well as 1 dollar. Banknotes come in denominations of $5, $10, $20, $20, $50 and $100, all with designs reflecting Caribbean culture and history.

Monetary history and relevant facts

Prior to the adoption of the Eastern Caribbean dollar, Antigua and Barbuda used several currencies, including the Spanish real and the British pound sterling. An important milestone in the country's numismatics was the issuance of commemorative coins in 1981, celebrating Antigua and Barbuda's independence from the United Kingdom. These pieces, minted in silver and gold, are highly valued by collectors. In addition, the country has issued several series of commemorative coins over the years, highlighting themes such as local wildlife, historical events and important personalities.
