An important milestone in Bolivian numismatics was the minting of the first republican coin in 1827, shortly after the country's independence. Another significant event was the creation of the Potosí Mint in 1572, which for centuries was one of the main sources of silver coins for the Spanish Empire and later for Bolivia.
