Brazil Coins

The official currency of Brazil is the Brazilian real, introduced in 1994 as part of the Real Plan to stabilize the economy. Brazilian numismatics reflect a rich monetary history that dates back to colonial times and has undergone various changes over the years.

The current Brazilian real

The Brazilian real is divided into 100 cents and is available in coins of 5, 10, 25, 50 cents and 1 real. Banknotes circulate in denominations of 2, 5, 10, 20, 50, 100 and 200 reais. The Central Bank of Brazil is responsible for the issuance and control of the currency, implementing advanced security measures to prevent counterfeiting.

Brazilian monetary history

Before the real, Brazil used several currencies, including the cruzeiro and the cruzado. During the colonial period, Portuguese and Spanish coins circulated. An important milestone in Brazilian numismatics was the minting of the first coins in Brazilian territory in 1695, marking the beginning of a monetary tradition of its own that has evolved to the present, reflecting the country's political and economic changes.
