Comoros Coins
The official currency of Comoros is the Comorian franc, which is divided into 100 cents. This monetary system has an interesting history and has undergone several changes over time.
Current currency and its history
The Comorian franc was introduced in 1975, following the country' s independence from France. It was initially pegged to the French franc, but since 1994 it has been pegged to the euro at a rate of 491.96775 Comorian francs to the euro. The Central Bank of Comoros is responsible for issuing and regulating the currency, which circulates in the form of banknotes and coins of different denominations.
Monetary history and relevant facts
Prior to independence, Comoros used the CFA franc, common in many French African colonies. An interesting numismatic fact is that in 1915 emergency banknotes were issued due to the shortage of currency during the First World War. In addition, a new series of banknotes with modernized designs reflecting the culture and nature of the archipelago was introduced in 2013, marking an important milestone in the country's numismatic history.
