Cyprus Coins

Cyprus, a Mediterranean island with a rich history, has experienced several changes in its monetary system over the centuries. From ancient coins to the adoption of the euro, Cypriot numismatics reflect the political and economic evolution of the island.

Current currency in circulation

Since January 1, 2008, Cyprus has used the euro as its official currency. Cypriot euro coins feature unique designs on their national side, including the Cyprus mouflon, an emblematic animal of the island, on the 1, 2 and 5 cent coins. Other denominations feature historical and cultural motifs, such as the Kyrenia ship on the 10, 20 and 50 cent coins.

Predecessor currency history

Prior to the euro, the Cyprus pound was the official currency of Cyprus from 1879 to 2007. Initially pegged to the pound sterling, the Cyprus pound became an independent currency in 1972. A significant milestone in Cypriot numismatics was the introduction of the first decimal coins in 1983, which replaced the previous system based on pounds, shillings and piastres, thus simplifying the island's monetary system.
