Guinea-Bissau Coins

The official currency of Guinea-Bissau is the West African CFA franc, shared with other countries in the region. This currency has been an integral part of the country's economy since its independence, reflecting its history and regional economic relations.

Currency history

Before adopting the CFA Franc, Guinea-Bissau used the Guinean Peso. This currency was introduced in 1975 following the country's independence from Portugal. The Guinean peso was replaced by the CFA franc in 1997 when Guinea-Bissau joined the West African Economic and Monetary Union (WAEMU), marking a significant change in its monetary policy.

Numismatic milestones

A relevant event in Guinea-Bissau numismatics was the issuance of commemorative coins during the Guinean peso era, celebrating the country's culture and history. In addition, the transition to the CFA franc in 1997 represented an important milestone, integrating Guinea-Bissau into a larger and more stable regional monetary system, which has significantly influenced its economy and international trade.
