Hungary Coins

The official currency of Hungary is the Hungarian forint, which was introduced in 1946 and remains in circulation to this day. Hungarian numismatics has a rich history that reflects the country's political and economic changes over the centuries.

Monetary history of Hungary

Prior to the forint, Hungary used a variety of currencies, including the pengő during the interwar period and the Austro-Hungarian krona during the Austro-Hungarian Empire. The pengő suffered one of the worst hyperinflations in history after World War II, leading to the introduction of the forint as a stable currency.

Relevant numismatic milestones.

Among the highlights of Hungarian numismatics is the minting of gold coins during the reign of Matthias Corvinus in the 15th century, considered masterpieces of the Renaissance. In addition, Hungary was one of the first countries to issue regular commemorative coins in the 1960s, a practice that continues to this day with issues celebrating important historical, cultural and sporting events.
