India Coins

Numismatics in India has a rich history dating back thousands of years. From ancient silver coins to the modern rupee, the Indian monetary system has evolved significantly over time, reflecting the political, economic and cultural changes of the subcontinent.

Current currency in circulation

The Indian rupee has been the official currency of the Republic of India since 1947. Currently, banknotes circulate in denominations of 10, 20, 50, 100, 200, 500 and 2000 rupees, while coins are minted in denominations of 1, 2, 5 and 10 rupees. The rupee symbol (₹), introduced in 2010, is a combination of the Devanagari letter "Ra" and the Latin letter "R", representing both the Indian heritage and its global presence.

Monetary history and highlights

Prior to independence, India used a variety of monetary systems, including the punch-marked coins of the 6th century BC and the silver rupees of the Mughal Empire. An important milestone was the introduction of the uniform rupee by the British in 1835. In terms of numismatic highlights, the discovery of Greco-Bactrian coins in northern India, attesting to the cultural exchange between ancient civilizations, and the minting of the commemorative 75 rupee coin in 2022 to celebrate the 75th anniversary of Indian independence, stand out.
