Israel Coins

Israel' s numismatics reflect the country's rich history and culture. Since its founding in 1948, Israel has used different coins, each with its own historical and cultural significance. The current coinage and its predecessor history offer a fascinating insight into the nation's economic and political evolution.

The Israeli New Shekel

The Israeli New Shekel (NIS) has been the official currency of Israel since 1986. It is divided into 100 agorot and is available in denominations of 1, 2, 5 and 10 shekels in coins, and 20, 50, 100 and 200 shekels in banknotes. The designs on the coins and banknotes depict historical figures and national symbols, such as the Menorah and the Star of David. The Bank of Israel is responsible for issuing and regulating the currency, maintaining its stability in international markets.

Monetary history and numismatic milestones

Prior to the NIS, Israel used several currencies, including the Israeli lira ( 1948-1980) and the shekel (1980-1985). An important milestone in Israeli numismatics was the introduction of commemorative coins in 1958, celebrating the tenth anniversary of the state. Since then, Israel has issued numerous commemorative coins, highlighting historical and cultural events. Another significant event was the series of Independence coins, minted between 1958 and 1967, depicting biblical scenes and symbols of Jewish national rebirth.
