Lebanon Coins

The official currency of Lebanon is the Lebanese pound, also known as the Lebanese lira. This monetary system has a rich history that reflects the country's political and economic changes over time.

Current currency in circulation

The Lebanese pound is divided into 100 piastres, although due to inflation, piastre coins are no longer used. Currently, bills of 1,000, 5,000, 10,000, 20,000, 50,000 and 100,000 pounds are in circulation. The coins in use are 250 and 500 pounds. The Central Bank of Lebanon is responsible for issuing and regulating the currency.

Monetary history and relevant facts

Prior to the Lebanese pound, the country used the Syrian lira and the Ottoman lira. The Lebanese pound was introduced in 1924, during the French mandate. An important milestone was the creation of the Central Bank in 1964, which assumed responsibility for issuing currency. The Lebanese civil war (1975-1990) had a significant impact on the economy and the currency, leading to a sharp devaluation. In 2020, Lebanon faced a severe economic crisis that resulted in an even more dramatic devaluation of the pound.
