The Libyan dinar was introduced in 1971, replacing the Libyan pound. Currently, coins of 50 and 100 dirhams are in circulation, as well as banknotes of 1, 5, 10, 20 and 50 dinars. Prior to independence in 1951, Libya used a variety of currencies, including the Ottoman piastra and the Italian lira. An important milestone in Libyan numismatics was the issuance of commemorative gold coins in 1952 to celebrate the country's independence. During the Qaddafi regime, coins and banknotes were issued with his effigy, which were withdrawn after his fall in 2011.
