The official currency of Mauritius is the Mauritian rupee, which is divided into 100 cents. The current monetary system reflects the rich history and economic development of this island nation in the Indian Ocean.

The Mauritian rupee was introduced in 1877 and currently circulates in denominations of 25, 50 cents and 1, 5, 10, 20, 20, 50, 50, 100, 200, 500, 1000 and 2000 rupees. Monetary history and highlights

Prior to the rupee, Mauritius used a variety of currencies, including the Mauritian pound and the Mauritian dollar. An important milestone in Mauritian numismatics was the issuance of the first commemorative coin in 1978, celebrating the 10th anniversary of independence. Since then, Mauritius has issued numerous commemorative and collector coins, highlighting historical events, national figures and the island's rich fauna and flora.
