Mexico Coins

Mexican numismatics is a fascinating field of study that encompasses the history and evolution of currency in Mexico. From pre-Hispanic times to the present, the Mexican monetary system has undergone numerous changes, reflecting the rich history and culture of the country.

Current currency in circulation

The Mexican peso has been the official currency of Mexico since 1993. Current denominations include coins of 10, 20 and 50 cents, as well as 1, 2, 5, 10 and 20 pesos. Banknotes circulate in denominations of 20, 50, 100, 200, 500 and 1000 pesos. Banco de México is responsible for the issuance and regulation of the currency, constantly implementing new security measures to prevent counterfeiting.

Monetary history and relevant facts

Prior to the current peso, Mexico used a variety of currencies, including the Spanish real during colonial times and the original Mexican peso after independence. An important milestone in Mexican numismatics was the minting of the first decimal coin in 1863. In addition, the Mexican Mint, founded in 1535, is the oldest in the Americas and has produced iconic coins such as the gold Centenario, commemorating the centennial of Mexican independence in 1921.
