Current currency in circulation
The modern kyat is divided into 100 pyas, although due to inflation, pya coins are no longer used. Currently, bills of 50, 100, 200, 500, 1000, 5000 and 10000 kyat are in circulation. The Central Bank of Myanmar is responsible for issuing and regulating the currency. In 2020, new banknotes with enhanced security features were introduced to combat counterfeiting.
Monetary history and relevant facts
Prior to the kyat, Myanmar used several currencies, including the Burmese rupee during the British colonial period. An important milestone in Myanmar numismatics was the introduction of the kyat in 1952, shortly after the country's independence. During the military regime from 1962 to 2011, the government implemented a multiple exchange rate system, which led to a significant divergence between official and black market exchange rates. In 2012, Myanmar initiated a currency reform, unifying exchange rates and allowing greater fluctuation of the kyat on the international market.
