Palestine Coins

The numismatics of Palestine reflect a rich monetary history influenced by various civilizations and political powers. Currently, the currency in circulation in the Palestinian territories is the Israeli shekel, although other currencies such as the Jordanian dinar and the U.S. dollar are also used.

Monetary history

The monetary history of Palestine is complex and diverse. For centuries, the region used currencies from different empires, including Roman, Byzantine and Ottoman coins. In the 20th century, under the British Mandate of Palestine, the Palestinian pound was introduced and circulated until 1948. After the creation of the State of Israel, the Israeli lira was adopted, which was later replaced by the shekel in 1980.

Numismatic milestones

Among the most significant numismatic milestones in Palestine are the coins minted during the First Jewish-Roman War (66-73 AD), which are considered the first autonomous Jewish coins. Another relevant fact was the issuance of coins by the Palestinian Authority in 1995, although these were never widely circulated. In addition, archaeological discoveries of monetary treasures in the region have provided valuable information on the economic and cultural history of Palestine over the centuries.
