Current currency in circulation
The current Peruvian sol was introduced in 1991, replacing the inti. Coins in circulation include denominations of 10, 20 and 50 cents, as well as 1, 2 and 5 soles. These pieces feature designs that honor Peruvian culture and history, such as the national coat of arms and pre-Columbian figures. The Central Reserve Bank of Peru is responsible for the issuance and control of the currency.
Monetary history and relevant facts
Before the current sol, Peru used various coins, including the silver real during colonial times and the gold sol in the 19th century. An important milestone in Peruvian numismatics was the creation of the National Mint in Lima in 1565, which minted coins for much of South America. In more recent times, the hyperinflation of the 1980s led to the introduction of the inti in 1985, which was later replaced by the nuevo sol in 1991, ushering in an era of greater monetary stability.
