Saint Helena Coins

The St. Helena Pound is the official currency of St. Helena, Ascension and Tristan de Acuna, British Overseas Territories. This currency is pegged to the pound sterling in a parity relationship and circulates alongside United Kingdom banknotes and coins.

Monetary History

Prior to the introduction of the St. Helena pound, the island used a variety of currencies, including British sterling and local coins issued by the East India Company. In 1976, the St. Helena pound was established as the official currency, although it continued to maintain its parity with the British pound sterling.

Numismatic milestones

St. Helena has issued several commemorative coins over the years, including a series dedicated to Napoleon Bonaparte, who was exiled on the island. In 2002, a special £5 coin was minted to commemorate the 500th anniversary of the island's discovery. Also, in 2017, St. Helena issued its first gold coin, celebrating the 270th anniversary of Napoleon's birth.
