South Rhodesia Coins

The monetary history of Southern Rhodesia is fascinating and reflects the political and economic changes in the region. From its establishment as a British colony to its independence and subsequent transformation into Zimbabwe, the country has experienced various monetary systems and coin issues that are of great interest to numismatists.

Colonial coins and early issues

During the colonial period, Southern Rhodesia initially used the British pound sterling. In 1932, the Southern Rhodesian pound was introduced, which maintained parity with the British pound sterling. The first coins minted specifically for Southern Rhodesia were issued in 1932, including denominations of 3 pence, 6 pence, 1 shilling and 2 shillings. These coins featured distinctive designs with local motifs, such as aloe on the 6 pence coin and sable on the 2 shilling coin.

Post-independence monetary changes

Following the unilateral declaration of independence in 1965, Rhodesia continued to use the Rhodesian pound until 1970, when the Rhodesian dollar was introduced. This change marked an important milestone in the country's numismatics. The new coins featured national symbols such as the Zimbabwe eagle and the baobab. In 1980, with the transition to Zimbabwe, the Zimbabwean dollar was introduced, which experienced several series of issues and historic hyperinflation in the following decades, resulting in coins and banknotes of extremely high denominations that are now highly sought-after collector's items.
