Eswatini Coins
The official currency of Eswatini (formerly known as Swaziland) is the lilangeni, whose ISO code is SZL. This currency is pegged to the South African rand at a 1:1 parity and both circulate freely in the country. Monetary history
Prior to the introduction of the lilangeni in 1974, Eswatini used the South African rand as its official currency. During the colonial period, the country used various currencies, including the British pound sterling and, later, the South African rand after its introduction in 1961. The decision to create its own currency was part of efforts to assert national identity after independence in 1968.
Numismatic milestones
A significant milestone in Eswatini numismatics was the issuance of commemorative coins in 1968 to celebrate the country's independence. In addition, in 2018, a new series of coins and banknotes were launched featuring the portrait of King Mswati III, reflecting the country's name change from Swaziland to Eswatini.
