Prior to independence in 1960, the Congo used the Belgian franc as its currency. After its emancipation, the country adopted the Congolese franc, which was replaced in 1967 by the zaire. In 1998, due to hyperinflation, the Congolese franc was reintroduced and remains the official currency to this day.

An important milestone in Congolese numismatics was the issuance of commemorative coins in 2002 to celebrate the 40th anniversary of independence. In addition, in 2010, the Central Bank of Congo launched a new series of banknotes with modernized designs and improved security features, depicting the country's wildlife and natural resources.
