Suriname Coin List
The official currency of Suriname is the Surinamese dollar, which was introduced in 2004 to replace the Surinamese guilder. This monetary change marked an important milestone in the country's economic history, reflecting its evolution since its independence from the Netherlands in 1975.
Monetary history
Prior to the adoption of the Surinamese dollar, the country used several currencies throughout its history. During the colonial period, Dutch coins and the Dutch West Indies guilder circulated. After independence, Suriname introduced the Surinamese guilder in 1975, which remained the official currency until 2004. This period was marked by significant inflation and devaluations, which led to the need for currency reform.
Surinamese Numismatics
The numismatics of Suriname reflect the country's rich history and cultural diversity. Surinamese coins have featured designs depicting local flora and fauna, as well as important national symbols. A highlight in Surinamese numismatics was the issuance of commemorative coins in 2000 to celebrate the new millennium, which featured cultural and natural motifs unique to Suriname. In addition, the transition to the Surinamese dollar in 2004 introduced a new series of coins and banknotes with modern designs reflecting the contemporary national identity.
