Argentine Peso (1983-1985) Coin List

The Argentine Peso was the official currency of Argentina from June 1983 to June 1985. This period was marked by rampant hyperinflation which led to the rapid devaluation of the currency and the need to issue high denomination banknotes.

Historical and economic context

The introduction of the Argentine Peso took place in a context of severe economic crisis inherited from the military dictatorship. The democratic government of Raúl Alfonsín faced an uncontrolled inflation that reached astronomical levels. During this brief period, 1, 5, 10 and 50 Argentine peso coins were issued, although their use was limited due to their rapid loss of value. The 1 Argentine peso coins, minted in aluminum, had the effigy of General José de San Martín on the obverse and the Argentine national coat of arms on the reverse.

Characteristics of the coins and their impact

The larger denomination coins, such as the 10 and 50 Argentine pesos, were minted in cupro-nickel and had a longer circulation. However, the speed of inflation meant that even these higher denominations quickly lost purchasing power. A notable aspect of this period was the coexistence of these coins with high denomination banknotes, with bills of up to 10,000 Argentine pesos being issued. This situation reflected the severity of the economic crisis and led to the implementation of the Austral Plan in June 1985, which replaced the Argentine Peso with a new currency, the Austral, in an attempt to control hyperinflation.
