2nd Republic (1945-2001) Coin List
The Second Republic of Austria, established in 1945 after World War II, marked a period of reconstruction and economic stability that was reflected in its monetary system. During this time, Austria underwent significant changes to its currency, moving from the Austrian schilling to the euro.
The post-war Austrian Schilling
After the liberation of Austria in 1945, the Austrian schilling was reintroduced as the official currency. Initially, Allied occupation banknotes were issued, but soon the Austrian National Bank began producing its own currency. The first coins of the Second Republic were minted in 1946, with denominations of 1, 2, 5, 10, 20 and 50 groschen, as well as 1 and 2 shillings. These pieces reflected the country's economic recovery, with designs honoring Austrian culture and history. Over the following decades, new denominations and designs were introduced, including commemorative coins celebrating important events and prominent figures of the nation.
Transition to the euro and numismatic legacy
In 1995, Austria joined the European Union, which would eventually lead to the adoption of the euro. On January 1, 2002, Austria, along with 11 other European countries, officially introduced the euro as legal tender, replacing the schilling. This change marked the end of an era for Austrian numismatics, but also the beginning of a new one. Austrian euro coins retained design elements that reflected national identity, such as the edelweiss flower and the Belvedere Palace on the cent coins. The legacy of the Austrian shilling endured in numismatic collections and collective memory, representing an important chapter in Austria's monetary history during the Second Republic.
