Azores Coin List

The monetary history of the Azores is closely linked to that of Portugal, although with some particularities. From the 15th century until the end of the 20th century, the Azores used various currencies and underwent significant changes in their monetary system, reflecting their status as an autonomous region of Portugal.

Currencies used in the Azores

Historically, the Azores used the Portuguese real as their main currency. In 1911, with the implementation of the First Portuguese Republic, the Portuguese escudo was introduced and became the official currency of the islands. During World War II, the Azores issued emergency banknotes due to currency shortages. In 2002, like mainland Portugal, the Azores adopted the euro as their official currency, marking the end of the escudo era.

Numismatic milestones in the Azores

An important milestone in Azorean numismatics was the issuance of coins specific to the islands during the reign of Maria II of Portugal in the 19th century. These coins bore the inscription "Açores" and had a different value than the mainland coins. Another significant event was the creation of the Bank of Portugal in the Azores in 1895, which issued special banknotes for the region. In more recent times, the transition to the euro in 2002 marked the end of a single monetary era for the Azores and their full integration into the European monetary system.
