Emperor Peter I (1823-1831) Coins

The reign of Emperor Pedro I in Brazil, which lasted from 1823 to 1831, was a crucial period in the history of the country and its monetary system. During these years, Brazil underwent important political and economic changes that were reflected in the minting of coins, laying the foundations for the future monetary system of the empire.

Historical and political context

Following Brazil's declaration of independence in 1822, Pedro I was crowned as the country's first emperor the following year. His reign was marked by the consolidation of the new state and the struggle for international recognition. During this period, Brazil faced internal and external challenges, including the War of Independence, conflicts with the provinces and the Cisplatine War. These events had a significant impact on the economy and, consequently, on the monetary system of the young empire, which needed to establish its own numismatic identity distinct from the Portuguese heritage.

Monetary system and coinage

Under Pedro I, new coins were introduced to reflect the sovereignty of the Brazilian Empire. The first issues maintained the monetary system inherited from Portugal, with the real as the basic unit. The most common coins of this period included copper pieces of 10, 20 and 40 réis, as well as silver coins of 160, 320 and 640 réis. One of the most notable issues was the gold coin of 6400 réis, known as "peça", which bore the portrait of the emperor and the coat of arms of the empire. These coins not only served as a medium of exchange, but also symbolized the legitimacy and power of the new regime. Despite efforts to establish a stable monetary system, the Brazilian economy faced difficulties during this period, leading to fluctuations in the value of the currency and occasional shortages.
