King John VI (1802-1822) Coins

The reign of John VI in Brazil from 1802 to 1822 was a period of great change for the Portuguese colony. During these two decades, Brazil underwent a significant transformation from being a mere colony to becoming the seat of the Portuguese Empire and eventually an independent nation. This period also saw important developments in the Brazilian monetary system.

The arrival of the Portuguese Court and its consequences

In 1808, the Portuguese royal family fled to Brazil to escape the Napoleonic invasion of Portugal. This event marked a turning point in Brazilian history. John VI, then Prince Regent, elevated Brazil to the status of a United Kingdom with Portugal in 1815. This decision had a significant impact on the economy and coinage. The first Mint was established in Rio de Janeiro, which began producing gold, silver and copper coins. Coins from this period often bore the effigy of John VI and symbols of the United Kingdom of Portugal, Brazil and Algarves, reflecting Brazil's new status.

The Road to Independence and Transitional Coins

As 1822 approached, tensions between Brazil and Portugal increased, culminating in Brazil's declaration of independence. During this transitional period, coins reflected the political changes underway. Some coins minted in 1822 still bore the image of John VI, while others already displayed symbols of independent Brazil. A particularly interesting coin from this period is the "Peça da Coroação", a gold coin minted to commemorate the coronation of Pedro I, son of John VI, as emperor of Brazil. These transitional coins are highly valued by collectors, as they represent a crucial moment in Brazilian history and mark the end of John VI's reign in Brazil.
