Cruceiro New (1967-1970) Coin List

The Cruceiro Novo was the official coin of Brazil from 1967 to 1970, introduced as part of a monetary reform to combat inflation. This period marked an important chapter in Brazilian numismatic history, reflecting the economic and political challenges of the time.

Coin characteristics and design

The Cruceiro Novo coins were characterized by their modern and symbolic design. Denominations of 1, 2, 5, 10, 10, 20 and 50 cents were minted, as well as 1 cruceiro nuevo. The obverse side of the coins featured allegorical figures representing freedom, progress and national unity, while the reverse side showed the face value along with motifs of Brazilian flora and fauna. The minting quality was significantly improved compared to previous issues, using stainless steel and cupro-nickel alloys to increase the durability of the pieces.

Economic impact and legacy

The introduction of the Cruceiro Nuevo was part of an ambitious economic stabilization plan implemented by the military government of the time. Although it initially succeeded in containing inflation, its effect was short-lived. The rapid devaluation of the currency led to its replacement by the Cruzeiro in 1970, just three years after its introduction. Despite its brief existence, the Cruceiro Novo left an important legacy in Brazilian numismatics, being today highly valued collector's items that reflect a crucial period of economic and political transition in Brazilian history.
