Dominica Coin List

The official currency of Dominica is the Eastern Caribbean dollar, a currency shared by several countries in the region. This monetary system has an interesting history and has undergone significant changes over time.

Current currency in circulation

The Eastern Caribbean dollar was introduced in 1965 and is issued by the Eastern Caribbean Central Bank. Coins in circulation include denominations of 1, 2, 5, 10 and 25 cents, as well as 1 dollar. Banknotes come in denominations of 5, 10, 20, 50 and 100 dollars. The ISO 4217 code for this currency is XCD.

Monetary history and relevant facts

Prior to the East Caribbean dollar, Dominica used several currencies, including the British West Indies dollar and, before that, the British pound sterling. An important milestone in Dominica's numismatics was the issuance of commemorative coins in 1978 to celebrate its independence. In addition, in 2015, the Eastern Caribbean Central Bank introduced new polymer banknotes, improving the security and durability of the currency.
