Republic/former Franco (1870-1960) Coin List
The era of the Republic and the Old Franc in France, which spanned from 1870 to 1960, was a period of great political and economic changes that were reflected in the country's numismatics. During these years, France underwent several transformations in its monetary system, going through different designs and denominations that represented the values and ideals of each historical stage.
The Third Republic and its coins (1870-1940)
The French Third Republic was established in 1870 after the fall of the Second Empire. During this period, French coins underwent several significant changes. The allegorical figure of Marianne, the symbol of the Republic, was introduced on many of the coinage. The most common denominations included the franc, centimes and gold pieces such as the 20-franc Napoleon. In 1898, the famous silver coin known as the "Semeuse" (The Sower), designed by Oscar Roty, was issued and became an icon of French numismatics. The economic crisis of the 1930s led to the introduction of nickel and aluminum coins to replace the silver and bronze coins.
The Vichy regime and the Fourth Republic (1940-1958)
During the German occupation and the Vichy regime, changes in coin design occurred, replacing the motto "Liberté, Égalité, Fraternité" with "Travail, Famille, Patrie". After liberation and the establishment of the Fourth Republic in 1946, republican designs were reintroduced. This period was characterized by high inflation and the devaluation of the franc, which led to the creation of higher denominations. In 1960, under the presidency of Charles de Gaulle, the "new franc", equivalent to 100 old francs, was implemented, marking the beginning of a new monetary era. The coins of this period reflect the post-war economic recovery and the desire for financial stability, with designs that evoked France's modernity and industrial progress.
