Saxony-Meiningen Coin List
The Duchy of Saxony-Meiningen was a historic German state that existed from 1681 to 1918. Located in the region of Thuringia, this small duchy played an important role in Germany's monetary history, issuing its own coins for much of its existence.
History and government of Saxony-Meiningen
Saxony-Meiningen came into existence as a result of the division of the territories of the House of Wettin in 1680. Under the rule of the Ernestine line of this ducal house, the state experienced periods of prosperity and challenges. The Dukes of Saxe-Meiningen were known for their patronage of the arts and culture, making their capital, Meiningen, an important cultural center. The duchy maintained its independence until the fall of the German Empire in 1918, when it was integrated into the new state of Thuringia during the Weimar Republic.
Monetary system and coinage of Saxony-Meiningen
The monetary system of Saxony-Meiningen reflected the complexity of the German monetary landscape prior to unification. Initially, the duchy minted coins based on the Taler system, common in many German states. These early issues included denominations such as the Thaler, half Thaler and smaller pieces. After German monetary unification in 1871, Saxony-Meiningen adopted the Mark as its official currency, although it retained the right to mint its own coins. Coins of this period often featured the portrait of the reigning duke on the obverse and the coat of arms of the duchy on the reverse. Some commemorative issues, such as those celebrating ducal anniversaries or important events, are particularly prized by collectors because of their rarity and artistic quality.
