Grand Duke of Oldenburg (1829-1918) Coin List
The Grand Duchy of Oldenburg was a sovereign state within the German Confederation and later the German Empire from 1829 to 1918. During this period, Oldenburg underwent major political and economic changes that were reflected in its monetary system and minted coins.
History and development of the Grand Duchy
The Grand Duchy of Oldenburg was established in 1829 when the Duchy of Oldenburg was elevated to the status of Grand Duchy. Over the following decades, Oldenburg became an important commercial and maritime center in northern Germany. The Grand Duchy's economy was based primarily on agriculture, livestock and maritime trade. In 1867, Oldenburg joined the North German Confederation and subsequently joined the German Empire in 1871. Despite being part of the Empire, Oldenburg retained some autonomy in internal affairs, including the minting of coins.
Oldenburg's monetary system and coins
The Oldenburg monetary system evolved throughout the 19th century. Initially, the Grand Duchy used the silver Taler as its main monetary unit. However, following German monetary unification in 1871, Oldenburg adopted the Deutsche Mark as its official currency. During this period, the Grand Duchy minted a variety of coins, including silver and gold pieces. Among the most notable coins were the 5 silver marks with the portrait of the Grand Duke, minted between 1900 and 1901, and the 2 and 5 mark commemorative coins issued in 1901 to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the reign of Grand Duke Peter II. These coins are highly valued by collectors due to their rarity and historical significance. Coin production in Oldenburg ceased in 1918 with the abdication of the last Grand Duke and the dissolution of the Grand Duchy after the First World War.
