Grenada Coins

Numismatics in Granada has a rich history going back centuries. From the coins of the Nasrid Kingdom to the current circulation of the euro, the city has witnessed diverse monetary systems that reflect its historical and cultural evolution.

Current currency in circulation

Granada currently uses the euro as its official currency, as do the rest of Spain and most of the countries of the European Union. The euro was introduced in 2002, replacing the Spanish peseta. Euro coins minted in Spain feature designs representing the country's culture and history, including motifs related to the Alhambra in Granada on some commemorative issues.

Predecessor monetary history

Prior to the euro, the peseta was the official currency of Granada and Spain from 1868 to 2002. However, the numismatic history of Granada is much older. During the period of the Nasrid Kingdom (1238-1492), gold dinars and silver dirhams were minted with Arabic inscriptions. After the Christian conquest, the Catholic Monarchs introduced the silver real and the gold ducat, marking a significant change in local numismatics.
