Iran Coins
The official currency of Iran is the Iranian rial, which has been the country's unit of currency since 1932. Iran's numismatic history is rich and diverse, reflecting the political and economic changes the nation has experienced over the centuries.
Current currency and its history
The Iranian rial is divided into 100 dinars, although due to inflation, dinars are no longer used in practice. The currency has undergone several devaluations throughout its history, leading to the introduction of high denomination banknotes. Prior to the rial, Iran used the toman, a currency still used colloquially in the country, where 1 toman is equivalent to 10 rials.
Numismatic milestones
Iranian numismatics has a history dating back more than 2,500 years. The first Persian coins, known as darics, were minted during the Achaemenid Empire in the 6th century BC. During the Islamic era, Iran adopted the Arab monetary system, using gold dinars and silver dirhams. An important milestone was the currency reform of 1932, which introduced the modern rial, replacing the qiran, which had been the official currency since 1825.
