New franc (1960-2002) Coin List

The New Monegasque franc was the official currency of the Principality of Monaco from 1960 until 2002, when it was replaced by the euro. This period marked an important monetary transition for the small European state, reflecting the economic and political changes of the time.

Introduction of the New Franc and its Characteristics

In 1960, Monaco adopted the New Franc in line with the French monetary reform. The parity remained fixed with the French franc at a ratio of 1:1. Monegasque coins of this period featured unique designs reflecting the identity of the principality, including portraits of the reigning princes and national symbols. Denominations of 1, 2, 5, 10, 10, 20 and 50 centimes were minted, as well as 1/2, 1 and 2 francs. The higher value coins, such as the 10 and 20 francs, were particularly prized by collectors because of their elaborate designs and limited production.

Evolution and Legacy of the New Monegasque Franc

During its four decades of existence, the New Monegasque franc underwent several changes in design and composition. The effigies of Princes Rainier III and Albert II appeared on the coins, reflecting the dynastic continuity of the principality. In the 1990s, new denominations and commemorative designs were introduced, increasing numismatic interest. The last series of New Franc coins, issued in 2001, became a coveted collector's item, marking the end of a monetary era. Although the New Franc ceased circulation in 2002, its legacy lives on in numismatic collections and in Monaco's economic memory, representing a crucial period in the principality's financial history.
